Canada opened the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in Sao Paolo with a 2-0 victory over Australia.
Scoring were Christine Sinclair, who says the goal is to prove London was not a fluke and Janine Beckie, who scored just 20 seconds in – an Olympic record.
The games officially start Friday and Chef de Mission Curt Harnett, the four-time Olympic cyclist, says Canada’s ready.
”They are here with fire in their hearts and ice in their veins and it has been such an honour to see them in beast mode over the last few months on the road to Rio.”
Canada, which has 314 athletes there, tied with Hungary for 13th place with 18 medals in the 2012 London Games.
Canada’s goal is to place in the top 12 in Brazil.
