They were only supposed to split $5.7-million in bonuses if last summer’s Toronto Pan Am and Parapan Am Games stayed in the black.
The provincial auditor-general says the event came in $342-million over budget, yet the province still paid more than $5-million in performance bonuses to over 50 senior officials.
Games officials had said the event came in within the $2.4-billion budget, however Auditor-General Bonnie Lysyk found that the total cost was about $2.5-billion.
Her math shows that when compared to the adjusted bid budget of $2.2-billion, the Games were $342-million in the red and since the province committed to paying most of the cost overruns, Ontario was on the hook for an extra $304-million.
Lysyk says ”nonetheless” Ontarians can take pride in the Games as they were on time, with no major incidents and Canada had its best-ever medal counts.
