The Bank of Canada has a list of a dozen women who may eventually end up on a new banknote.
The list, selected by an advisory council from public submissions, includes artists Emily Carr, and Pitseolak Ashoona, authors Lucy Maud Montgomery, Pauline Johnson and Gabrielle Roy, feminists Nellie McClung, Idola Saint-Jean and Therese Casgrain, humanitarian Lotta Hitschmanova, aircraft designer Elise MacGill, Olympian Bobbie Rosenfeld and businesswoman Viola Desmond.
The central bank says more than 460 women were nominated from over 26,000 thousand submissions.
A poll to gauge the public’s view on the list will be commissioned.
The advisory council and experts will then whittle it down to three to five finalists with Finance Minister Bill Morneau making the selection.
