Queen Elizabeth II turns 90 on Thursday April 21st, and the milestone is being marked by another discussion about the role of royals in Canada.

A new Angus Reid poll suggests 4 in 10 Canadians want to stay with the current constitutional monarchy system, while 4 in 10 want to get rid of it.

The other 2 in 10 Canadians surveyed are undecided or didn’t have an opinion.

Gary Toffoli is the executive director of a charity aimed at preserving the monarchy.

He says the current system may not be perfect, but he doesn’t see a better alternative.

The director of Citizens for a Canadian Republic disagrees.

Tom Freda thinks making the governor general the official head of state would be an improvement.

Freda also says it’s time the monarchy issue was debated in the House of Commons.
