Nova Scotia’s film and television sector says it can prove it is much more valuable to the province’s economy – than the government claims.

The Screen Nova Scotia organization commissioned a study by Price WaterhouseCoopers – which found an estimated contribution to the provincial GDP of $180 million in 2014.

That’s when the government was providing $24 million in funding to the industry –   through a film tax credit.

Another estimate says the industry directly supported 1,600 full-time equivalent jobs in 2014 – with workers bringing in an average salary of $43,000.

The province’s Liberal government scrapped the film tax credit in the 2015 provincial budget – saying it was not affordable.

At the time, a government analysis put the value of production at only $66.8 million in 2013-14.
