Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie says it’s time Canada’s sixth largest city controlled its own destiny and as a result, Mississauga council has voted to study a proposal that Could see the city opt out of Peel Region.
The year-long review will look into long-standing issues about whether or not Mississauga should continue to be part of the area which also includes Brampton and Caledon.
The regional government system was brought in in 1974 as a means of helping smaller municipalities deliver a variety of services and costly infrastructure needs.
Cormbie argues that two thirds of the tax revenue for the Region comes from Mississauga, but Ontario’s 3rd largest city has only 50 per cent of the say at Peel Region Council.
If the study supports separation, Mississauga residents would be asked to vote on that as part of a referendum in the 2018 municipal election.
