It’s being called the biggest leak of off-shore tax haven records in history and a number of high profile Canadians are involved as is a veritable who’s who of world movers and shakers.
The Canadians include lawyers, mining and oil executives and other business leaders. At the top of the list are dozens of heads of state including those in the inner circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the prime minister of Iceland. Also on the list, movie star Jackie Chan and soccer superstar Lionel Messi.
The information is contained in what is being called “The Panama Papers”; a trove of documents leaked from an international law firm based in Panama which sets up off-shore accounts.
The accounts themselves are not illegal, but authorities say they are often used by those looking to avoid paying taxes.
