Motorists beware.

The fines for a number of parking infractions in the city of Toronto have gone up almost 4 times.  Fines have increased from $40 to $150 for blocking sidewalks, double parking, standing in TTC zones and blocking lanes reserved for high occupancy vehicles.

Toronto Mayor John Tory says the increased fines are part of the city’s efforts to ease congestion by cracking down on illegal parking.  The increased fines will also help offset lower revenue from fewer parking tickets being issued as a result of the Mayor’s “zero tolerance” policy.  It saw the number of vehicles towed for illegal parking double last year over the year before.
A 2008 study showed traffic congestion costs consumers more than $3 billion a year.
