Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says today’s throne speech will be “efficient” and a general outline of his government’s legislative plans for the parliamentary sitting that’s supposed to last about a week.

During this brief period, it’s expected the governing Liberals will pass a motion to cut taxes for middle-income earners, while raising taxes on those earning more than $200,000 a year.

Yesterday in the Commons, MPs elected veteran Halifax Liberal Geoff Regan as speaker, who effectively becomes the referee of the House of Commons.

Prime Minister Trudeau paid tribute to a special woman in Geoff Regan’s life.

“Only two women in the history of Canada have had the dubious distinction of having been the daughter, the wife and the mother of a Member of Parliament. One of those women is my mother, the other is yours Mr. Speaker, whom we salute,” Trudeau told the Commons.

Geoff Regan’s mother Carole is the daughter of the late Jack Harrison, a Saskatchewan Liberal Member of Parliament. She is the wife of Gerald Regan who served as premier of Nova Scotia in the 1970’s and later as a minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.
