The Toronto District School Board has done an about face and will be issuing final marks to its elementary school students despite an administrative strike by teachers that began in May. Parents had been told they would only receive letters telling them whether their children had advanced to the next grade. But, in a letter to parents posted on the TDSB website, Education Director Donna Quan says report cards will be mailed to students in Grades 1 though 8 during the week of July 13. The board’s action comes as tensions between elementary teachers and school boards are ramping up. The Ontario School Boards Association has put a $3.2-billion figure on teacher contract demands. The teachers’ union says that’s a deflection tactic over report cards and says it has yet to put a salary figure into the central negotiations.
