An area of east Toronto is about to become Canada’s first national urban park. M.P.s in the House of Commons have passed the Rouge National Urban Park Act which provides the protection for the Rouge Valley. The legislation gives Parks Canada the legal framework to protect the park’s ecosystems, wildlife, flora, fossils, artifacts, and other natural and cultural resources. Under the legislation, hunting, mineral extraction, dumping, polluting, harassing wildlife, poaching and the removal of artifacts and fossils are prohibited. The bill now goes to the Senate for review.
