The outgoing Mayor of Brampton will leave office at the end of the month with a severance of $375,000. Susan Fennell was the highest-paid mayor in Canada in 2012. She was soundly defeated in last month’s municipal election after a spending scandal. As a result of losing the mayor’s chair, Fennell will receive almost $300,000 in a retirement allowance recognizing her 26 years of municipal service. She’ll receive another $24,000 in pension benefits and some $50,000 more in retirement benefits for her work on Peel Region Council. The municipal payouts are the result of a controversial increase in severance voted in by Brampton City Council last year. Brampton Mayor-elect Linda Jeffrey says she will talk with legal council to find out whether the severance can be rolled back. Brampton City Council will also meet to decide what penalty to impose on Fennell who denies any wrong-doing.
