There will be a few new Toronto City Councillors since several of the current councillors did not run for re-election. The only councillor who lost his seat was John Parker in Ward 26. The two-term councillor fell to challenger Jon Burnside, who had been endorsed by John Tory.

Stephen Holyday will now represent Ward 3 in Etobicoke.  He is the son of longtime former politician Doug Holiday.  Justin Di Ciano is the new councillor for Ward 5 Etobicoke-Lakeshore.  He lost by just 109 votes in the last election.  Other newcomers to city council are Christin Carmichael Greb in Ward 16, who takes over from outgoing councillor Karen Stintz.  Jim Karygiannis becomes the new councillor in ward 39 Scarborough Agincourt and Joe Cressy won the seat in Trinity Spadina’s ward 20.

Among the returning Toronto city councillors, there is Josh Colle who conquered ward 15 Eglinton-Lawrence with 75 percent of the vote.  Glenn De Baeremaeker won a decisive victory in ward 38, Scarborough Centre. Michelle Berardenetti won re-election in ward 35, Scarborough Southwest.  Paul Ainslie is savouring his 3rd victory in ward 43, Scarborough East.  And Vince Crisanti has reclaimed his seat in Ward 1, North Etobicoke.  Other returning Toronto City Councillors include Paula Fletcher, Frances Nunziata, Georgio Mammoliti and Joe Mihevc among 36 in total.

It is worth noting that half of the 22 Toronto District School Board trustees will be new, including Michael Ford, nephew to Rob and Doug Ford.  Six incumbents went down to defeat.

Across the GTA, voters in Mississauga gave an overwhelming victory to Bonnie Crombie over Steve Mahoney to replace their beloved mayor Hazel McCallion. The 93 year old mayor endorsed Crombie.  She feels Crombie’s platform will be implemented since Crombie won a landslide victory with over 63 percent of the vote.  At her victory party, Crombie said, “I’m so overwhelmed and I’m grateful to the residents of Mississauga for electing me the next mayor of Mississauga to help fulfill Hazel’s legacy.”

When McCallion leaves office, Milton’s long time mayor Gordon Krantz will become the longest serving mayor in the country.  He was first elected mayor in 1980.

In Brampton, the spending scandal that has engulfed Susan Fennell for months led to her defeat. Former provincial cabinet minister Linda Jeffrey won 49 per cent of the vote to Fennell’s twelve per cent.

In Vaughan, longtime mayor Maurizio Bevilacqua was re-elected with 79 percent of the vote.  In Markham, Frank Scarpitti had no problem hanging on to the mayor’s job with 70 percent of the vote.  Elsewhere, Don Mitchell is the new mayor of Whitby and John Henry has been re-elected in Oshawa.

Another closely watched race in Ontario was in London.  Matt Brown has succeeded Joe Fontana, who resigned this summer after he was convicted of government fraud for forging a cheque when he was a Liberal MP.
