Enhanced measures to prepare for a possible Ebola case in this province have been outlined this morning by Ontario’s Health Minister.

“I want to assure all Ontarians,” Dr. Eric Hoskins explained, “that their safety is my top priority, and that I will do everything that is necessary to protect their safety.”

Doctor Eric Hoskins held a morning news conference at Toronto Western Hospital to reveal updated guidelines to help front line health workers.

“I’ve asked the Chief Interim Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Mowat to issue a directive today to all healthcare employers that will expand and improve training, that will provide additional personal protective equipment, including protective suits and masks, and that will improve protocols for diagnosing, containing and treating Ebola virus disease,” Hoskins continued.

The Health Minister also explained that the Ministry of Health has designated ten hospitals across the province to serve as referral centres for any Ebola cases that might surface. These include 3 Toronto hospitals; St. Michaels, Sunnybrook and Toronto Western Hospital.

Hoskins maintains the risk of the deadly virus here is very low.

There has been criticism in recent days from the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario of a lack of a clear plan on Ebola.
