Deadly shootings in two different areas of Toronto yesterday afternoon have raised concerns about school safety.

The first incident happened across the street from Don Bosco Catholic Secondary School in Etobicoke.  Toronto Catholic School Board trustee Maria Rizzo says a 15 year old student form James Cardinal McGuigan Catholic High School was killed.  The other victim was also a high school student, but she did not know what school he attended.

Across the city in Regent Park, a young man police described as between 15 and 20 years of age died in a shooting near Queen and Parliament. Some nearby elementary schools were locked down. Several schools in Etobicoke, including Don Bosco, were also locked down for several hours.

It was just two weeks ago, a student was stabbed to death at North Albion Collegiate.

The issue of school security came up at last night’s mayoral debate. Schools across Ontario beefed up security policies after the 2007 death of 15 year old Jordan Manners at CW Jeffreys Collegiate.  After the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown Connecticut, the Ontario government pledged $10-million to install video surveillance equipment and buzzers in schools to make them more secure.
