A rare discovery has the classical music world buzzing.

The head of the Hungarian National Szechenyi Library’s music collection has stumbled across a musical treasure.

As Balazs Mikusi looked through a folder of unidentified music scores – he spotted a page that made his heart jump.

As he read along with the notes on the ancient page, he realized the music was very familiar.

Page one of the four page score turned out to be the long-lost manuscript of Mozart’s Piano Sonata #11 in A Major : one of the most well-known sonatas of Mozart.

Only one other surviving page exists: the last page.

It’s preserved in Saltzburg – where Mozart was born.

There are plans to re-unite the the pages in Saltzburg’s Mozarteum Foundation – and after that the manuscript will be moved from its unmarked folder to its rightful place at Szechenyi Library’s vault, where it will be displayed from time to time.
