An arrest has been made in connection with a stabbing death yesterday at a Toronto public high school.  Further details about the suspect are expected later today.  Toronto Police investigators had initially said they were looking for a 17 year old in connection with the death.

Hamid Aminzada was stabbed during the noon hour at North Albion Collegiate at Kipling and Finch.  He died at Humber River Hospital.  His family says he’d been stabbed at least six times.  The 19 year old Afghan-born student from Pakistan has become the second student in the history of the Toronto District School Board to be killed inside a school.   Principal Naeem Siddiq says it’s a tragic loss.  “This is a very nice and kind young man,” Siddiq explained, “It’s heartbreaking for us because all we’ve seen from him is just being respectful.  So, it’s a very sad story for us as he was quite focused on his family and his future.  So, there’s no indication of this young man being involved in any way in anything negative.”

Aminzada’s cousin, Salim Fahimi, says the teen was the third eldest of at least seven children.  He says Aminzada was born in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, but lived in Peshawar, Pakistan “pretty much his whole life”.  Fahimi says the Aminzada family moved to Canada “for the same reason everyone comes here.  They want to have a better future, a better life.”

It was in 2007, 15 year old Jordan Manners was shot and killed at C.W. Jefferys Collegiate in the Jane and Finch area.  His death prompted a number of new safety measures in TDSB schools.
