Stephen Harper says security agencies have long been aware of threats to Canada and while Ottawa’s changed laws to deal with them, his government’s looking at what else can be done.

The prime minister’s remarks are in response to the latest threat – this one from the Islamic State terrorist group.

It’s released a 42-minute audio speech, in which a spokesperson, urges supporters to kill Canadians and other westerners, regardless if they’re civilians or members of the military.

The speech calls on Muslims everywhere ti kill anyone whose country’s taking part to defeat the al-Qaida splinter group.

Canada’s sending 69 special forces personnel to serve as advisers to Iraqi forces battling the terrorists.

Harper says the government’s also talking with allies on the ground there to identify other ways Canada can help.
