Toronto police are investigating a city councillor over a payment that has already cost him three months’ pay.
The financial crimes unit will investigate Giorgio Mammoliti over an 80-thousand-dollar gift he received from a fundraiser last year. The city’s integrity commissioner wrote a scathing report saying that Mammoliti violated the city’s code of conduct in accepting a gift. The report led to city councillors suspending his salary for 90 days
Mammoliti denied any wrongdoing, or that the event was a fundraiser. He says it was a celebration of his “return to health” after undergoing brain surgery.
It’s not the first time the councillor has faced controversy over financial matters. Last year, a city audit found that he over-spent by about twelve thousand dollars in the 2010 election.
Mammoliti is facing stiff opposition in his run for re-election in Ward Seven.
