Doug Ford has yet to launch his Toronto mayoral campaign.  The city councillor and brother of Rob Ford spent time once again yesterday at Mount Sinai Hospital where the mayor is ailing with an abdominal tumour.  Doug Ford had hinted he might be in campaign mode yesterday, but that didn’t happen.  He has yet to say when he will officially launch his mayoral campaign or if an official launch will even take place.

The two other main candidates, Olivia Chow and John Tory, are in wait and see mode.  Both are critical of the new candidate when asked about him.  Chow told The New AM 740’s Goldhawk Fights Back, Doug Ford’s values are all wrong.  “He is out there cutting programs, cutting kids’ recreation programs, cutting TTC budget.  That’s the wrong direction,” Chow explained, “I think we have enough cuts.  We need to invest in people.”

Chow has changed up her campaign strategy by lumping both Ford and John Tory together.  A Chow press release yesterday ended with the line, “Ford-Tory: we can’t afford four more years.”  During a mayoral debate last night, Chow accused Tory of not having a plan to fund a downtown subway relief line.  Tory responded, “I actually do support the downtown relief line, which you say I don’t.”  Chow continued to interrupt him by asking, “How are you going to pay for it?”  Tory dodged that question, but then was critical of Chow for not supporting the Scarborough subway.  Tory said, “the last thing I want to do is get to the mayor’s office and immediately pick a fight the federal and provincial governments who’ve decided and that’s where they’ve put their money.”

Earlier yesterday, Tory cancelled a planned appearance at a debate organized by a group called TTCRiders.  Organizers called his sudden withdrawal “completely disrespectful.”  Tory did not provide a reason why he cancelled at the last minute, but he did apologize.  Tory has since pulled out of two other debates scheduled for today; one on seniors’ issues, the other on the waterfront.  The waterfront debate has since been cancelled altogether.
