Hundreds of people, detained by Toronto police during the G20 summit four years ago, can go ahead with a class-action lawsuit.
It was stalled last year when a judge said it could not proceed because its ”broad, sweeping nature” was considered problematic.
But following an appeal, a Divisional Court panel has now given the suit the green light.
In a unanimous decision, Justice Ian Nordheimer wrote on behalf of the panel that police actions alleged in the suit, if proven, would have ”violated a basic tenet of how police in a free and democratic society are expected to conduct themselves.”
Over one thousand were detained initially but most were released without charge within 24 hours.
