The Canadian government announced further sanctions against Russia in response to the continuing Ukraine crisis. The additional measures target 19 Russian and Ukrainian individuals and are accompanied by economic sanctions against 22 Russian and Ukrainian groups and economic entities. In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered government agencies to restrict imports of food and agricultural products from countries that have imposed sanctions against Russia,
which will mostly hit the Canadian pork industry. Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada say Canada’s agricultural exports to Russia amounted to 563-million dollars in 2012, and that most of the trade was in frozen pork.
