The Toronto Arts Council wants the future of the city’s cultural community to become part of the mayoral debate.

The Council is preparing to launch a campaign called “Toronto Loves the Arts.” It has a report showing that the cultural sector contributes $11.3-billion to Toronto’s economy, and 174,000 Torontonians work in the cultural sector.

The report also shows that 70% of Toronto residents either attend cultural events or contribute to the arts. And 63% say arts and cultural influence their decision to live in Toronto.

The report also indicates that city council still hasn’t reached its promised goal of investing $25 per capita in the arts. Although Ontario is the continent’s third-largest entertainment centre — after New York and California — Toronto’s per capita investment in the arts ranks fifth in the country. Montreal and Vancouver invest more than twice what Toronto does. Ottawa and Calgary also contribute more.
