The Vatican has responded to the United Nations by releasing – for the first time – statistics on how the Roman Catholic Church has disciplined priests who were accused of raping and molesting children.

The Holy See says over the past decade – 848 priests have been defrocked.

Another 2,572 have been given lesser sanctions.

The unprecedented release of the figures came during a second day of intense investigation today by a committee monitoring the implementation of the U.N. Treaty Against Torture.

The Vatican’s U.N. ambassador to Geneva, Archbishop Silvano Tomasi  acknowledged that sexual abuse involving children: “can be considered torture.”

Up to now the Vatican – in its annual yearbook – has released inconsistent data on the defrocking of priests.

The figures provided to the U.N. are the first year-by-year breakdown .
