Internet piracy has plagued the music industry for years. But what is often overlooked is the piracy of sheet music. It’s an important consideration for composers of Broadway musicals. And they’re banding together to do something about it.

New York’s Dramatist Guild is hosting its first anti-piracy awareness event this evening. Stephen Sondheim and Stephen Schwartz are two of the leading Broadway composers taking part.

They want to convince sheet music pirates to close down the websites where they make bootleg sheet music available.

The committee has created resources to help songwriters, including tips on self-publishing. A special video was created to help get the message across. Someone Wrote That Song was created by Broadway writers Alan Menken and Craig Carnelia.
