The parents of the lone suspect in yesterday’s mass stabbings in Calgary are said to be absolutely devastated by what happened. Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson says the suspect’s father is a 33 year veteran with the force. “They’re devastate and they feel so much pain for the families that were impacted by their son and they wanted me to specifically pass that on,” Hanson explained, “They have been incredibly cooperative with this investigation.”
Five University of Calgary students in their 20’s were stabbed to death as they were celebrating the last day of classes at a house party early yesterday. 22 year old Matthew de Grood is charged with 5 counts of first degree murder in that city’s worst ever mass murder.
Some 500 students and faculty members attended a vigil at the University of Calgary to mourn the five students. University president Elizabeth Cannon says the world has lost five bright, promising, beautiful young people.
Calgary’s mayor Naheed Nenshi told those gathered, “we’ve lost five good young people who did nothing wrong, who like all of us had dreams and hopes, and today, we come together and we mourn those five lives lost. We mourn that additional one life plunged into darkness.”
Another mass stabbing took place in Canada yesterday. Four people were wounded in an apparently random knife attack at a shopping centre in downtown Regina. A male youth is in custody. And a week ago, 21 high school students were stabbed at a school in the Pittsburgh area. A 16 year old suspect remains in a juvenile detention centre charged as an adult.
