It’s a change that would make it more difficult for you to be near your children or grandchildren at school. Tonight, Toronto District School Board Trustees will discuss the issue of requiring background checks for volunteers. Some parents and trustees are concerned that requiring such checks for all volunteers, could lead to less participation by family members. Right now, only frequent volunteers are required to provide background checks. The proposed rule-change is among the dozens of recommendations from the Jeffrey Baldwin inquest. Baldwin was a five-year old boy who was starved to death by his grandparents. If the proposal is passed, it would require every volunteer to get a background check once every four years and update it annually.
