It’s a ruling that could set a precedent across Ontario. A three-member panel of the Ontario divisional court has ruled that a Toronto-area father has the right to have his son exempted from all religious programs at a Roman Catholic high school in Brampton. The panel ruled that Oliver Erazo’s son, Johnathan should not have to attend any religious liturgies or retreats at Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, under provisions in the provincial education act. The Act allows students of all faiths to attend Catholic schools provided they also take religion courses. But parents can write to the relevant school board to ask their child be exempted from any program or course of study in religious education. In its 16-page ruling, the panel said liturgies and retreats fall under the program definition of the act and should also be exempt. Dufferin-Peel School Board spokesman, Bruce Campbell says the board is considering its options.
