Prime Minister Stephen Harper went to Kiev today where he promised continued assistance to Ukraine and praised the new leaders for showing restraint in the face of ”provocations” from Moscow.

After meeting with interim Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Harper quickly took aim at Russian President Vladimir Putin.  He suggested the annexation of Crimea could inspire ”other regimes” to arm themselves for conflict.

Harper said ”It is for Ukrainians and Ukrainians only to decide their future.  In this principle Canada will not waver”.

The Prime Minister’s expected to urge other G-7 leaders to take a tougher stand against Russia at an emergency meeting Monday in the Netherlands.
