Old Man Winter makes his exit today. But he will milk it for all it’s worth.
The coldest winter in 35 years is into its final hours. But its impact will linger for a while yet. Meteorologist Matt MacDonald says the polar vortex that has gripped most of the country for the last three months is not ready to let go just yet. MacDonald says ice on the Great Lakes and piles of snow on the ground will keep temperatures low for some time to come.
He adds that the only places where it actually feels like spring are on the west coast and in the arctic.
Here in Toronto, Hydro crews worked through the night to deal with an unusual phenomenon. Misty, wet weather combined with salt spray from the roads to cause power lines to let fly with sparks and set some hydro poles on fire. There have been spotty power outages as a result.
For the record, Spring begins officially at 12:57 this afternoon.
