Toronto City Councillors have been warned to be on their best behavior today.
Council meets for the first time since the raucus November meeting that saw Rob Ford knock over Councillor Pam McConnell, and his brother Doug arguing with spectators.
Speaker Frances Nunziata doesn’t want to see a repeat of that. So she has taking the unusual step of sending a letter to councillors asking them to be more civil.
In her three-page letter, Nunziata says, “Disruptive, disrespectful and unparliamentary behaviour reflects poorly on city council, and undermines public confidence in our ability to govern.”
Councillors have several items to consider during their last meeting of the year. One of the main items will be a debate on David Mirvish’s proposal to tear down a block of King Street that includes the Princess of Wales Theatre to build three condo towers designed by Frank Gehry. The complex would include a gallery for Mirvish’s art collection, and provide a first home for the Canadian Theatre Museum.
