The Fender Stratocaster that Bob Dylan played at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival when he famously went electric has been sold at auction for $965,000. It went to an absentee buyer and Christie’s says it is a record for a guitar sold at auction. The Newport Festival was a defining moment that marked Dylan’s move from acoustic folk to electric rock’n’roll. The instrument has been in the possession of a New Jersey family for nearly 50 years. Dylan left it on a private plane piloted by the owner’s late father. There are also some hand and typewritten lyric fragments found inside the guitar case. They have a pres-ale estimate ranging from $3,000 to $30,000.
