A Toronto police officer has been convicted of assaulting a protester during the G20 summit in Toronto three years ago.

The Crown had charged that Constable Babak Andalib-Goortani became overwhelmed by the protests and “lashed out” at protester Adam Nobody. Video showed the officer hitting Nobody with his baton after he had been wrestled to the ground.

Nobody had claimed to be a peaceful demonstrator, but police reports alleged he had been aggressively egging other protesters on.

Judge Louise Botham said, “a police officer is not entitled to use unlimited force to affect an arrest.”

Nobody clapped as the verdict was read. He told reporters afterwards that he was surprised at the verdict. He said, “We live in a system where we know the cops get off all the time.”

Nobody says the conviction doesn’t end the case. He and his family have launched a $14.2-million lawsuit against the police.
