It’s a special night in Toronto for fans of 1960’s music.  For the first time in more than 40 years, the original members of “The Rascals” are performing together.  Their “Once Upon a Dream” stage show opens at the Royal Alexandra Theatre tonight, after recently selling out on Broadway.  The American soul rockers gained fame in the 1960s with hits including “Groovin” and “Good Lovin”.  It was Stevie Van Zandt of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band who reunited the group and wrote the show for them.  “I knew their extraordinary place in history was yet to be confirmed, or yet to be carved in contract,” he explained, “and I knew they had the goods.  The substance was there.”  Van Zandt said he started working on the idea for the show about 30 years ago.  He says it wasn’t easy getting the band members to come together onstage again after they split in 1970.  Van Zandt credits his anti-apartheid efforts in South Africa in the 1980’s with giving him the negotiating tools to make the reunion finally happen.
