Toronto Councillors have voted down a proposal to build a downtown casino.

Councillors debated the casino issue on Tuesday at a special meeting that Mayor Rob Ford had attempted to quash once he determined that the province wasn’t behind the project any longer.

But a majority of councillors signed a petition that allowed the debate to take place as scheduled.

Today, the mayor had moved a motion to have council reject building a casino downtown, but support expansion of existing gaming facilities at Woodbine.

That motion was voted down.

The city had learned in recent days that the province would not reward Toronto with anywhere near the $100 million that it had been seeking.

Several councillors said that was a factor in their decision-making process on the casino issue.
