Dusseldorf’s Deutsche Oper Am Rhein has cancelled its current production of Richard Wagner’s Tannhauser in the face of widespread outrage over Nazi imagery used by director Burkhard Kosminski that included scenes showing Jews being executed and dying in the gas chambers.

The company says it knew the production would be controversial, but they didn’t expect the widespread outrage that erupted opening night. Patrons boo’d, and many stormed out, slamming the theatre doors to punctuate their anger.

Kosminski refused to tone down the controversial scenes. So the company has cancelled the rest of the run. The cast will perform a concert version instead.
