Roddy Doyle’s 1987 novel ” The Commitments” will become a musical for London’s West End – with the adaptation crafted by the Irish writer himself.
Doyle’s 25-year-old novel follows a group of working-class Dubliners who form a soul band.
The 1991 movie adaptation, directed by Alan Parker, became a runaway hit.
Doyle says he’s no fan of musicals but he changed his mind after seeing how successfully songs were used in shows such as “Jersey Boys.”
Doyle also says he’s writing a sequel to “The Commitments.”
He won the Booker prize for “Paddy Clarke Ha Ha Ha.”
