Toronto civic leaders are grappling with the issue of youth violence again in the wake of the killings of three 15-year-old boys in three separate incidents so far this year.
The boys were all killed on Toronto Community Housing Corporation property. None of the boys was known to police.
Police Chief Bill Blair says he doesn’t see a trend developing, but he sees it as a reminder that young people should be provided with better opportunities.
Mayor Rob Ford says he doesn’t know what the answer is, but he favours more police over social programs.
Councillor Josh Matlow is proposing that City Council consider adopting the Roots of Youth Violence report prepared for the provincial government by Roy McMurtry and Alvin Curling in 2008. Matlow’s motion will require a two-thirds majority vote to be added to today’s council agenda.
