SUSAN RUBES -YPT FOUNDER - DIES AT 87

The woman who revolutionized children’s theatre in Toronto- has died.

Susan Douglas Rubes died peacefully yesterday at the age of 87.

She was born in Vienna and  emigrated to the U-S  after the start of the Second World War .

She met  and married  Czech/Canadian opera singer  Jan Rubes in 1950 and they moved to Toronto in 1959.

They were married for 59 years until his death in 2009.

Susan rubes founded Young People’s  Theatre in 1965  and  left in 1979 for the CBC  where she eventually became the head of Radio Drama .

She was awarded the Order of Canada in 1975, recognizing “a lifetime of outstanding achievement, dedication to the community and service to the nation” for her services to children’s theatre in Canada.

 A memorial book will be available at YPT on Monday, Jan. 28th to Saturday, Feb. 2nd.
