January is Alzheimer Awareness Month with the launch of a nationwide campaign called “See me, not my disease. Let’s talk about dementia.”
Mimi Lowi-Young is the CEO of the Alzheimer Society of Canada. She tells the New AM 740’s Goldhawk Fights Back we need to debunk the myth about dementia. “This disease now affects 747,000 people in Canada and we want to be sure that people can live their lives to the fullest without people seeing the disease but seeing the individual. We should be living with dignity and respect.”
A recent poll finds 4 in 10 people with dementia feel they’ve been avoided or treated differently after their diagnosis.
The Alzheimer Society offers an online quiz to test your attitudes and perceptions about dementia at alzheimer.ca. The entire interview can be heard at zoomerradio.ca.
