He created more than two hundred concert pieces. But it’s his film compositions for which he’ll be most widely remembered.
Sir Richard Rodney Bennett died on Christmas Eve. He once said the opening segment from the movie Murder on the Orient Express was his best film composition. It won him one of three Oscar nominations.
Bennett began composing professionally while still a student at the Royal Academy of Music. He also played and sang jazz to pay the bills, working extensively with Cleo Laine.
In 2004, Prince Charles asked Bennett to write a piece in memory of his grandmother. Reflections on a Scottish Folk Song was Bennett’s tribute to the Queen mother. He was knighted four years later.
Sir Richard Rodney Bennett was 76.
