It looks like Toronto residents may soon be able to go shopping on a statutory holiday.

But only one.

Toronto’s Economic Development committee debated a staff report that recommending relaxing shopping restrictions on four of Toronto’s nine stat holidays: Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, and Thanksgiving Day.

In the end, councillors voted to green-light shopping only on Victoria Day. Stores outside designated tourist areas will have to stay closed on the other eight stat holidays.

City Council will make the final decision.
