Toronto is expected to experience its hottest day of the year today, and perhaps the hottest July 17th ever. The mercury is forecast to climb to 37 Celsius today, which would beat the record of 35.2 set just a year ago.
A humidex advisory has been issued by Environment Canada, and the City of Toronto has upgraded its Heat Alert to an Extreme Heat Alert. That means seven cooling centres will be open throughout the city for those who do not have air conditioning.
Today will be the last day of the current heat wave. Temperatures will moderate tomorrow, with highs forecast in the upper twenties.
