Ontario’s Opposition NDP leader says the truth will come out when the province’s information and privacy commissioner releases a special report on the Ford Government’s $8.2-billion Greenbelt scandal.

Marit Stiles told reporters at Queen’s Park Monday morning that this kind of examination which is looking into related emails and documents, does have a precedent.

“Reports like these are actually quite rare and they’re very serious,” Stiles explained, “The information and privacy commissioner’s 2013 special report on the Liberal gas plant scandal triggered a police investigation which eventually sent the Liberal premier’s chief of staff to prison.”

Ontario Information and Privacy Commissioner Patricia Kosseim is looking into the use of non-government emails and deleted messages related to the Greenbelt, as well as the premier and government staffers’ reportedly using personal phones and emails on the controversial file.

In 2022, the Ford Tories removed land from the protected Greenbelt to build 50,000 homes.

After months of public backlash and reports from both the auditor general and the integrity commissioner, the premier reversed course

The RCMP is also conducting an investigation into the Greenbelt scandal.
