He was an Oscar-nominee who made food and American diets his life’s work, famously eating only at McDonald’s for an entire month to illustrate the dangers of a fast-food diet.

Documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock has died at age 53.

Spurlock made waves in 2004 with his groundbreaking film “Super Size Me” and returned in 2017 with “Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken!”, a sobering look at an industry that processes some nine-billion animals a year in America.

Using fun graphics and amusing music, Spurlock was known as a gonzo-like filmmaker who leaned into the ridiculous and bizarre.

According to a statement issued Friday by his family, Spurlock died on Thursday in New York, from complications of cancer.
