Toronto City Councillors begin a second day of meetings Thursday with a focus on the Gardiner Expressway construction which has closed two lanes each way between Dufferin and Strachan.

Councillor Brad Bradford plans to bring forward a motion to council to fast track the project by a year from three years to two, by implementing around-the-clock construction work between Dufferin and Strachan.

“The past seven weeks have been horrendous for people, so my motion in front of council at this meeting is to do everything we can to expedite that construction. That includes 24-7 working around the clock to get it done faster.

Bradford has support on council, including from Lily Cheng and James Pasternak.

“We should be getting that work done 24-7. Give them the noise exemptions they need and get the job done,” said Pasternak.

“As someone who previously lived in Asia, 24-7 is definitely something that should be normal. We have to find ways obviously to mitigate sound,” Cheng said.

According to the mayor, the current contractor is now working with city staff to develop a plan for getting the work done more quickly.

Olivia Chow also says the contractor is testing the noise levels that would be created by the sound of overnight demolition, not just regular construction work.
