Two-in-three Canadians feel that inflation at the grocery store is getting worse, even as food inflation has been steadily cooling.

That’s according to a new Leger survey which also finds almost 30-percent of Canadians believe food inflation has been primarily caused by grocery stores trying to increase profit margins, while others blame global economic factors or the federal government.

Seven-in-ten people polled say they’re aware of the ongoing boycott against Loblaw-owned stores, which started at the beginning of May.

But just two-in-ten say they or someone in their household are participating in the boycott.

Sylvain Charlebois is the director of the Agri-Food Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University.

He told Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer, Loblaw has really messed up their messaging by portraying themselves as the victims.

“It’s not been good, it’s been awful for the last, I’d say, year and a half, and I can tell you, I was actually meeting with a lot of industry folks last week in Montreal and every single company agreed that Loblaw had to endorse the Code of Conduct,” Charlebois explained. Loblaw did sign the Code of Conduct at the end of last week.

But it will only take effect if Walmart signs on, which has yet to happen.
