The Hot Docs Film Festival is closing its flagship Toronto theatre for about three months due to financial difficulties.
Canada’s largest film festival will shutter the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema starting June 12th, leading to temporary layoffs.
Montreal-based film critic Chris Bumbray says it’s not the only festival with troubles.
“It’s going to be tough for them to build up an audience because docs have never been the easiest sell, but they’re not alone, TIFF is also struggling.”
This year’s Hot Docs festival wrapped in early May as the organization faced ongoing uncertainty over its finances and concerns over a mass staff exodus amid word of a toxic work environment.
