Another major string quartet has decided to call it quits after some 34 seasons.
Toronto’s St. Lawrence String Quartet has announced it will disband at the end of this concert season. The group had been on a one-year hiatus following the death of founding violinist Geoff Nuttall.
The members have released a statement saying they’ve had the adventure of their lives and are profoundly grateful to have had the opportunity to explore the magic kingdom of the string quartet repertoire together.
The St. Lawrence String Quartet was founded in Toronto in 1989 and rose to international prominence following its 1992 win at the Banff International String Quartet Competition.
The ensemble’s final season will conclude with performances at Stanford University, where it has been ensemble in residence since 1998.
The statement says the musicians will remain at Stanford performing, teaching, directing the school’s chamber music program and producing the annual chamber music seminar.
