Toronto’s police chief has apologized for his remarks on Sunday April 21st, the day Umar Zameer was acquitted of all charges in the death of Det. Const. Jeffrey Northrup in July of 2021.
“I fully understand the concerns that have been expressed, and I’ve been reflecting on my comments as the chief of police,” Myron Demkiw told the Toronto Police Service Board on Tuesday.
Specifically, Chief Demkiw explained that he is sorry for saying he was hoping for a different outcome.
“I apologize for my choice of words in those early moments outside the courthouse. I want to be very clear, and repeat, that I respect and accept the decision of the jury,” Demkiw continued.
Demkiw repeated that closure can never come at the expense of justice and that he should have been more clear that he supports and accepts the verdict.
Last week, there was a call by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association for Chief Demkiw to apologize for what the CCLA says cast doubt on the verdict.
